At a rally on Tuesday, the Republican presidential candidate seemed to suggest that, should his supporters not be able to muster enough votes to stop Hillary Clinton from becoming president, they might just shoot her (or her Supreme Court nominees) instead.

"If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks," he said. "Although the Second Amendment people maybe there is, I don't know."

Many people were alarmed by this flippant comment, forcing Trump's campaign and supporters to defend the candidate.

"When Mr. Trump speaks, it's not as artful as a lot of people might think," his national campaign co-chair Sam Clovis told CNN.

Earlier, California Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter provided much the same defense to the same cable network.

"You're treating Mr. Trump's words like he is the most articulate person who's ever graced our ears with his words, and that is not true," Duncan told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "He is not a politician. He is not a person like you who's very articulate, very well spoken."

Candidate Trump: He's got the "best words." He's just not "very articulate."
