For the first time ever, renewables generated more energy than gas and coal combined in the UK.

The power record was quickly broken yet again later that day with 50.7 percent of demand coming from wind, solar, biomass, and hydro energy (that's 18.7 gigawatts in total renewables).

The power utility cited an energy research firm's data that showed high winds and low demand helped the UK reach the power record, which meant negative prices for energy for the first time -- another milestone. The BBC reported that prices fell to a tenth of normal levels -- that's how much power was generated by wind turbines.
