Playboy Club returning to NYC after 30 years, for better or worse

In the last few years, Playboy has been on a mission to rebrand: they've removed the whole "full nudity" thing from their print magazine, introduced a safe-for-work website, and even sold the legendary Playboy mansion (kind of).

Now, instead of moving forward, they've announced they're bringing back a bit of bunny nostalgia from the magazine's heyday: the Playboy Club.

In a press release published on Jan. 19, it was announced that the Playboy Club would be returning to New York City as the "key feature" in a Midtown hotel. The club will include "a lounge area, a game room and a full-service dining room" and, perhaps most importantly: Playboy Bunnies.

Though offering no details on wether the Bunnies will be throwing it back to the Club's roots and rocking vintage fluffy tails or bringing the "uniforms" into the 21st century, the press release did say that, "the alluring Playboy Bunny hostesses, waitresses and cocktail servers have a worldwide, well-deserved reputation for their style and graciousness." Because if Playboy Bunnies are known for anything, it's their graciousness.

The original New York City Playboy Club opened in 1962, and quickly fell under scrutiny when Gloria Steinem released "A Bunny's Tale" in 1963, an expose of the treatment of the she received while working undercover as a Bunny. Over the years many Bunnies protested the restrictions Playboy put on their lives outside of the Club, in addition to the many rules of employment.

Naturally, scrutiny was no match for the allure of women wearing fluffy tails and little else, and the club thrived for several decades. The franchise became international before declining and effectively becoming defunct in 1991 with most locations closing. The original NYC Playboy Club closed in 1986.

Maybe this Playboy Club reboot inspires a nice, scandalous, guilty pleasure reality show instead of an iconic exposé, but only time will tell.
